Taprobane Island, previously known to many Sri Lankans as Count de Mauney Island, is located 200 yards off the southern coast of Sri Lanka in the centre of Weligama bay.

Once the elegant residence of Count de Mauney, this beautiful villa, perched high on a private island, has been home to many distinguished guests, including Arthur C. Clarke and the auther Paul Bowles ('Spider House').

The island is approximately 2.5 acres and is similar in shape to Sri Lanka! Hence, the name Taprobane, which was the Greek name for Ceylon.

The lovingly restored residence, is octagonal shaped to allow a spectacular view of the Indian ocean and the bay. Set amidst lush gardens, with steps leading down to a small private beach, the villa also has a lovely infinity pool. The secluded pool surrounded by trees, with wonderful views of the bay is an idyllic place to be. To access the island, guests usually have to wade through the water! Alternatively you can ask a local fisherman to take you across in his boat, which is a wonderful experience!

Taprobane Island is a perfect venue for a small private wedding or for a family getogether

There are 5 bedrooms in total to accommodate a maximum of 10 people. The main house has two double rooms and a twin, suitable for children. Most of the rooms have antique four-poster beds with mosquito nets and ceiling fans. Vibrant colours are used throughout to create a stylish and comfortable environment. There are some wonderful pieces of antique furniture including the original bed used by the Count and Countess! The new wing has 2 double rooms. The bathrooms are in need of some modernisation.

The main lounge, with wonderful views and glass from floor to ceiling is a suntrap. There is a further sitting room with comfortable sofas and interesting pieces of furniture from far and near. The many verandahs offer you further sitting areas for sunbathing or sipping afternoon tea. This is a perfect venue for those wonderful family reunions as there are many nooks and crannies for solitude when you need it as well as plenty of entertaining space.

The villa comes with a cook, a steward, 2 houseboys, a gardener and a security guard. Though meals are not included in the rate, you can choose your meals from a menu or simply tell the cook what you would like to eat, and he will prepare it for you. The cook can prepare excellent Sri Lankan, S.E Asian or Western dishes.
